Liverpool Lucky To Have A Point

The first Champions League against the strong Portugese side, Porto. Though being the away side, many predicted a Liverpool win because of its past records of playing in this league. However, this is one match which I thought Liverpool didn't deserve to win although my heart wanted the 3 points.



We truly struggled the whole of 90 minutes. First ten minutes was horrendously poor. Porto as expected, was firing from all direction, and Liverpool didn't do what they do best, absorb and defend the pressure. They even struggled to play the normal game. They didn't pass the ball well, overall play was sloppy. Not even a single player performed to his standard.



Ricardo Quaresma was the key member of the Porto team. One of the most wanted wingers in Europe, he troubled Liverpool on both wings. Our defenders failed to contain him down. How can you allow a winger whom we wanted to buy in the summer so much space? He would definitely punish you. Without doubt, Porto went ahead with a stupid penalty conceded by Pepe Reina. I realised that we have been conceding penalties in our recent matches and that's a bad sign.



We created only one chance in the first half, fortunately, we managed to score through Dirk Kuyt. A freekick from Steve Finnan, a flick on by Big Sami and Dirk Kuyt was there to head it home. A similar goal like last season's Champions League final at Athens. Liverpool was lucky. A goal coming from nowhere.



Jermaine Pennant, whom I thought the one who can help in Liverpool attack in the game, had a very poor game. I do not know what happened to him and what's on his mind. He was unable to bring the ball down the wings, nor he provided any width to the team. His tackles were reckless and was testing the referee's patience. Eventually, he was sent off on 58 minutes.



A foolish and redundant tackle when the ball is heading for a goal kick. I could see and sense his frustration. However, at this level, we must keep cool and play the right football. Not venting your anger onto it. Pennant just did that and he had to learn from it. This is Champions League, not any amateur league.



The overall team play was extremely bad. We didn't create any clear chances and had to play most of the second half with 10 men. Rafa himself knew what went wrong and just by looking at his face, he's boiling looking at his team's performance. Porto was not able to score the second goal. We were lucky to get a point.

I'm beginning to fear as I watch Liverpool play these few matches. Based on their performance against Portsmouth and last night Porto, it seems that Liverpool is struggling. This is not something pleasant to be seen. Rightfully, on Liverpool's standard, we should have gotten all the points we needed from these matches. We really have to buck up in all areas and produce some results. Otherwise, I'm afraid this would turn out to be a disappointing season again.

Liverpool Held At Fratton Park

Was Rafa right to rest Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres on the bench? Was Rafa right to put Crouch upfront? Many would have disagreed with the man above for his selection options last Saturday.

Liverpool was being held 0-0 at Fratton Park against the strong-spirited Portsmouth. We would see it as a 2 point loss instead of a point gained. Liverpool didn't play well, in my opinion. Didn't create much chances and we didn't threaten David James much as well. Seeing the first 11 in the beginning, this just tells me that Rafa had chosen a group of players whom he thought was fresh and good enough to beat the Pompeys.



Peter Crouch was given the first start of the season. Sadly, he played badly. I do not know whether it's Rafa tactics to pump high balls to Crouch to flick on, or the players who wanted to play the typical England style of football. Crouch's control of the ball was terrible. Loses possession so easily and when balls are up, he can't even win the first ball and headers. Against the likes of Distin and Campbell, he is totally neutralised. He had a poor game, that's for sure. I do hope to see him improve further, otherwise, I'm afraid, he might even leave in the January transfer window.



Pepe Reina was the hero for the game as he saved the penalty from Kanu. A controversial penalty given against Liverpool and luckily, Reina made justice for Liverpool.

Liverpool's wing play was extremely poor. Only Jermaine Pennant was the dangerous one. The normal passing of Liverpool was not around on that day. Was it because of the international break? I believe that's not an excuse. If you are good, you would be good enough to overcome everything. Manchester United and Arsenal both have difficult away games. Still, they gotten 3 points.

Liverpool would really need to improve. Yes, we have squad depth. However, if we do not produce the right results, that's no point having a big squad. Rafa can continues his tinkering, if he produces the right results. Otherwise, I believe he would have lots of pressure on him.

A game which the Liverpool team was ruthless in their goals. Didn't hold back and went for every single ball in the pitch. A good game to watch and you could see that Rafa meant business now. Derby was not the strongest team, still, we made them looks like boys.


Jermaine Pennant, Javier Mascherano were all superb in the game. Xabi Alonso and Torres scoring 2 each, Voronin and Babel scoring the other 2. We could have more, but didn't finish the chances off.

Despite the high-scoring win, I believe we must not be too complacent. There's always room for improvement in every game and I could see some areas which we are weak in. 3 points is the most important and we are looking forward to the trip to Portsmouth.

A comfortable win against Toulouse in the second leg of Champions League qualifier. With Liverpool leading 1-0 from the 1st leg, we didn't hold back on the slender lead and went on scoring 4 goals, with a 5-0 aggregate score entering the group stages of the Champions League 07/08.



We started really well, keeping the ball and possession and we got ahead early in the game. Peter Crouch, who finally given the chance to start, scored his first goal of the season.



Sami Hyypia added the second with a typical header from a corner. Despite suffering from a broken nose, the big Finn had no problems scoring.





Dirk Kuyt was hardworking the whole day. He got paid for his efforts at the end with 2 nice goals. It's great to see all the strikers scoring for us.





The most encouraging thing is the fact that Rafa was able to rotate his squad and still playing well as a whole team. That's what we call squad depth. I hope this continues and I'm enjoying our football now.

Football Took A Step Back

This is the time when football has to take a back seat when you could see the sufferings from others.

Antonio Puerta, Sevilla and Spanish right back, had unfortunately passed away due to heart problems. Puerta, who won back-to-back UEFA Cups and the King's Cup with Sevilla, collapsed after jogging back towards his own goal 35 minutes into Saturday's game against Getafe.

Although he was able to walk off the pitch he collapsed again in the changing rooms and had to be given cardiac resuscitation before being taken to hospital.Sadly, he was unable to hang on and has left us.

Condolences to his loved ones and it's always sad to see such things happening.



In Liverpool, a 11 year old boy, Rhys Davies, was unfortunately killed and shot a week ago. He was an Everton fan and this brought the whole city together. When these things happened, we don't really care which club you support or how much differences you have among the clubs.

The family of Rhys Davies, was in Anfield this morning and a piece of music, also known as Johnny Todd, is used by city rivals Everton was being played ahead of Reds' traditional athem, You'll Never Walk Alone.

My deepest condolences to his loved ones and family, I hope that the truth would come to light very soon.

Sissoko & Voronin Seals Comfort Win

A game which we needed to win and we did with a 2-0 win over newly promoted Sunderland. Roy Keane's side has been working very hard and this game was no exception. They made Liverpool worked hard for the points under the hot weather.

Surprisingly, Momo Sissoko finally scored for us! After so long, he managed to put the ball into the net with a nice long shot!





We had many great chances throughout the game but just couldn't convert our chances into goals. That gave Sunderland some hope as they tend to gain more confidence further into the game. Torres and Voronin had great chances while Pennant was awesome throughout the game.



Alvaro Arbeloa was the one who I wish to praise. Quiet player but does his job well. He has been selected in every game so far for Liverpool. This tells me that Rafa believed in him and he's playing even better in every game. Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia was injured in this game and he has to makeshift to be centre-back in the later part of the game. Arbeloa did it brilliantly and because of that, Liverpool manged to score the second, the killer goal.

Counter attack by Babel and Pennant which led to a pass to Torres who lays it off to Voronin, who finished it steadily. Sunderland goalkeeper had made several outstanding saves throughout the match, we could have score more not because of him.



It's a comfortable win. A game which we must win and 3 points are in the bag. We have 7 points out of 9 and I believe it's not that bad. We have to keep it going. With hope in your heart, walk on.

A Letter From Luis Garcia

Though Garcia left us, but I guess his heart is always with us. That's his letter to us.

Dear Reds,

First of all I'd like to apologise for not having been back in touch sooner, but I needed to take some time to take on board all the recent changes and then to put down these words for you.

I'm sure you will understand.

I would rather this be a letter of thanks and gratitude, not simply a goodbye.

Yes, that's right, gratitude, because that is the word that best sums up my feelings for you all.

Taking the decision to change clubs hasn't been easy. Not easy at all.

I've experienced three fantastic years at the club and in the city. Three years in which together, the fans and the team, we have accomplished some fantastic achievements, and I'm sure that these successes will continue to be repeated in the near future.

You know that I like a challenge and that I don't just settle for second best.

Back then Liverpool Football Club gave me the opportunity to be part of an ambitious plan to put the Reds back at the summit of the game.

I think that together we managed to achieve that.

As I said, I do like challenges and in spite of the fact that at that time I was playing for my home town club, one of the biggest in the world, I wanted to be a part of that project that was being presented to me by Liverpool, and so I accepted the challenge.

Now, after three seasons in the Premier League and having won some major trophies, the chance came up for me to return to La Liga and be part of a new project at a club I already knew.

The idea of enjoying things in a Spanish club like we experienced together at Liverpool over these last three years appealed to me, and that's why I accepted the offer.

I want to thank everyone working at Liverpool Football Club for how well they have treated both my family and I, making us feel at home from the very first day to the last.

I also want to thank the management, coaching staff and directors for the opportunity they gave me back then to be part of such an important and well-loved club as Liverpool. A club which has helped me to grow as a footballer and where to date I have enjoyed the biggest success of my career.

Without a doubt, this success has been possible thanks to the outstanding group of players with whom I've been able to share a dressing room over the last three seasons.

I'm not going to mention anyone specifically, because I think that the secret of this team's success has been exactly that: nobody wanted to stand out above the rest and there has always been a great togetherness in the squad, which made it into something more than a group of players, it was a group of friends.

Thanks to all of you for your help and your friendship.

I've left until last the thank you which for me is the most important: Thank you to the supporters.

Your support allowed me to settle quickly at both the club and in the city, and you made me feel really at ease with you all right from the word go; that's the kind of help that you notice most of all during the difficult times, of which there have been a few during my time here.

I'd like to especially thank you for making up a song for me and you should know that every time I heard you singing it, it was like an extra injection of strength and motivation, even helping me to overcome pain occasionally during a game.

A game which Liverpool dominated, a game which Liverpool wanted to win, a game which clearly shown who deserved to win. Sadly, the game were robbed by referee Rob Styles. Poor decision making, showed cards without thinking and this cost us 2 points.

Liverpool started well in front of Anfield, the first home game of the season against the giants, Chelsea. What can you ask for more? Good passing, switching flanks and we managed to get a goal early in the 16th minute.



New record signing, Fernando Torres showed the fans why we bought him for. Pace, strength and clinical finishing were what he did. Got the ball from Captain Stevie, sudden burst pace outrun Chelsea defender, Ben Haim and shot past Petr Cech. That's what we have been lacking of for so many years ever since Michael Owen left us.



Chelsea was left shocked and they were clueless of what to do. They made a change which brought in Pizzaro playing upfront with Drogba. They created some great chances but failed to convert them. Liverpool defence was able to hang on.

Sadly, or I should say controversially, Rob Styles generously awarded a penalty to Chelsea which nobody else thought it is. Neither did Chelsea players argued, nor Jose Mourinho off his bench moaning. Malouda just jumped at Steve Finnan and fell. What the f***? It's a penalty? I'm sure many Liverpool fans would be thinking of that.





The team worked really hard. Pressed Chelsea in every area and I believe Chelsea was not able to handle us. We did everything well except the fact that we didn't score the second goal. However, it seems that Chelsea was not able to score against us until the dubious decision went against us.

I guess it's part of football and we have to accept it. Poor decisions are always there and sadly for this case, it happened against us and we have to pay for it. Many positives from the match can be seen. We played well and were a better team than Chelsea for the 90 minutes. I believe as long as we continue playing good and better football, we will definitely be there, no doubts.

For Rob Styles, I've nothing much to say about him. He might be the man who costs us this 2 points which may be crucial at the end of the season, we shall see. I believe he needs to attend some pressure management course on how to handle pressure. If not, don't be a referee.

Carra STILL Says No To England

Jamie Carragher has declined McClaren's invite back to international football. Read more.

It's a decision beneficial for Liverpool and personally, I'm glad to see our vice-captain ending his services for England and stood by his decision despite persuasion from England coach, McClaren.
England has not been treating our number one guy good, leaving him out despite him being fit and I don't believe he's worse than the likes of John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Ledley King etc.

So what's the point of giving your services to a country which don't appreciates you? England has been poor over the years and I don't think McClaren will not make it any better. If England plays Carragher and loses, somehow, blame will be on Jamie and I truly feels that he don't deserves such treatment.

A good decision Carra, they only needs you when they realised you are gone and the rest are injured. Winning trophies for Liverpool is definitely a better option.

Steven Gerrard Gives Reds A Flying Start

The opening match of the season. Expectations, hopes, comments are just some happening every season. As usual, Liverpool is also those who really needs to live up with it. They started the journey last night, at Villa Park.

With the new away strip, Liverpool came up on top and dominated most of the game. With Gerarrd and Alonso in the middle, Villa didn't trouble much in the first half. Instead, we managed to get a goal.

Laursen's Own Goal


Torres' shot was well-saved by the keeper, and credit to Kuyt, he didn't give up and kept going, causing Laursen deflecting the ball into his own net.

Villa came up in the second half. Probably due to Martin O Neil's half time talk. They were faster on the ball and caused several problems. Liverpool defence was unable to clear the ball on many occasions and eventually, Villa equalised.



Jamie Carragher was the culprit with a handball offence. He was awesome the entire game except for that moment.

Fortunately, Carragher's mistake was being covered up by fellow teammate, Steven Gerrard. Took the ball just outside the penalty area, causing a freekick from Petrov.
Up step Gerrard, and the rest is history.



What else can I say about Gerrard's quality? He's definitely going to improve and lead us to more victories.

On the whole, we deserved the win. However, there are much rooms for improvements for the team. Next home game will be the titans clash with Chelsea. We need to play better and be more clinical against the Blues.

A good 3 points in the bag and the journey continues..

Poll Results: Which is Best midfield partnership for Liverpool?

Yes, majority of us believe that the partnership of Steven Gerrard and Javier Mascherano suits Liverpool the best. However, the number of votes for Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso was not that far from the first.

I really wonder Rafa would play who in the middle. Will Gerrard be placed on the right again? Or Alonso will have to be on the bench when Gerrard plays in the middle? It's a good headache for Rafa, with so many options. More options is better than none.

Whoever plays, as long as we produces results, nobody will make any negative comments on the team. I do not care who plays in the middle. 3 points and advancement to the next round are what it really matters.

Liverpool board has unveiled the plans of the new stadium.







Its seems so beautiful and manager and players are praising it. I'm looking forward to see the new stadium as well as Anfield. I still hoping to get to see Anfield before it's gone pretty soon.

Based on the poll, many of you think that Fernando Torres would be a great signing for us. Many believed that Torres is a big hit and will be doing well for Liverpool Football Club. 48 votes with a 86%.

However, there were also quite a number felt that Torres' deal is a costly one. Afraid that he might be the next Morienties for Liverpool. 27 million pounds is way too high for a player and it's a risk. 6 votes with 11%.

Liverpool 3-2 Werder Bremen - All the goals and highlights

2 goals from new signing Andriy Voronin and a thunderbolt from John Arne Riise secured a third game win for Liverpool so far in preparation of the new season. Defensive mistakes which allows Breman scoring 2 as well.

Andriy Voronin, a free transfer signing, has been proving to everyone that he's not coming to Liverpool to sit on the bench. As he says before, he's going to a fight for his place in the team. Impressive for the past few games for Liverpool and he scored 2 goals against a good German side last night.

I didn't watch the game, but based on the highlights, he looks really lively in the game and seems to be on the spotlight now. Many would have think that he was bought to provide backup to the team, the 4th striker perhaps? I'm afraid not, based on such performances. He's telling Rafa that he's going to give him a big headache despite the arrival of Fernando Torres.



Torres did pretty well coming on for Voronin. Had 2 great chances to score but didn't have the finishing touch. Still, it's a great to see him playing for us in a Liverpool shirt. He fought hard, and looking great on the pitch. It's still pre-season and it's normal to see players not performing to the best yet.

Pre-season games are just games for the players to step up their stamina and fitness. It's still very early to predict anything. Of course, winning these friendly games also shows that the team is working hard for the season and I hope this goes on for a great start.

Liverpool has to start really early and can't afford to lose any points even in the beginning. The standard of the league is getting higher every year. We don't have the luxury of making mistakes early and winning the league later. By the time, we are just like before, fighting for third place. Liverpool is not a 3rd place team, they ought to be up there fighting, winning more trophies.

I don't hope for more, but having said that, I do hope Rafa will us something we haven't experience for a long long time.

Ryan Babel & Yossi Benayoun

Yes! 2 more major signings into the squad of Liverpool Football Club. It's excellent news for everyone out there and it clearly shows our ambitions for the upcoming season.

Ryan Babel, once a Arsenal target, has signed on a fee of 11.5 million pounds with us and I'm glad to see him wearing the Liverpool shirt. He's only 20 with many many years ahead of him. Fast on the ball and reminds me of John Barnes in the older days. He can play left wing which Liverpool is very weak in.

Yossi Benayoun. Moved from London, West Ham. 5 million pounds and it's the replacement for the departure of Luis Garcia. Played very well in the FA Cup final two years back and Rafa has been following him for some time. He has quick feet and dribbling seems to be his trademark. Looking forward to see how he can fit into the team and there's no doubt that he can adapt in the English football.

2 huge signings along with record signing, Fernando Torres explains it all. We are not going to sit back. We are going to challenge every trophy as we can. I have faith in Rafa and the lads. There might be more signings on the way. Looking forward to the new season.

Liverpool vice-captain Jamie Carragher has been thinking about his England career and it might be the end pretty soon. As for me, I believe that Carra should really start considering his options and I guess it's time for him.

England didn't show him any respect and chances to prove himself on the international stage. Mainly being used the utility man. Centre back, right back, left back, defensive midfield. He played so well for Liverpool and yet he got such treatment from the England team. Whenever he plays, he never let the team down and I really wonder what make him out of it.

You may argue that the partnership of Rio and Terry is the first option. Still, when one of them is out, Carragher is not chosen, left out instead. I can sense his frustration and disappointment. I strongly believe that he should quit the international stage and concentrate on his club level. Just like what Paul Scholes did, he went on playing so well for Manchester United. If England don't appreciate, Liverpool will.

Mas On Target Again!

Javier Mascherano scored the second consecutive game for Argentina in the Copa America against Peru with a 4-0 win. He was there to add the third for them. It's great seeing him scoring and playing well for Argentina. I do hope he can go on with this form and scores for us soon.

Pre-Season Friendly. Liverpool 3 Wrexham 2

Liverpool started their pre-season games yesterday and it was against Wrexham. The match ended up 3-2 to us with Besian Idrizaj scoring 3 goals while Jermaine Pennant assists it all. A good start and it's a match where mostly the young was put into play.

9. Fernando Torres

Finally, a big signing for us. Fernando Torres, 27 million move from Atletico Madrid. After so many days of excitement throughout the football news, it's finally confirmed.

A record signing for the club as the last one was 14 million. I guess it's time to break many records instead of keeping them. The 22 year old Spanish striker shows from over the years that he is one of the best strikers around. A first team member in the Spanish international team says it all.

Still, people are still afraid of him becoming another Fernando Morienties. He was unable to impress during his short spell in Liverpool. However, I beg to differ. Torres is still young and I believe they are 2 different strikers. Torres has great pace and technique which is suitable for the English League. Morienties was already in his 30s.

Every transfer is a risk and there's no transfer is assured a success. I believe Liverpool have to start taking more risks but of course, safer and sensible risks which will benefit the club.

I can't wait for our new No 9 to be playing in our Red shirt. Still, I guess we have to be patient. He may need some time to adapt. All we can do now is to be patient and see the good football next season.

Farewell Luis Garcia

The news of Luis Garcia leaving us is confirmed. He has moved to where he started, Atletico Madrid. His transfer has nothing to do with Torres big move though there were speculation of a part-exchange deal.

I'm sad to see him leaving us. Garcia is one of my favourite players and he has been scoring crucial goals for the team over the years. Many may feel that he's frustrating due to his high rate of losing possession. Still, it's no doubt that he's an important player for us. He is unlucky this season with an injury.



He is just one of the players who has a trick or two in his sleeves. Someone who can just create something out of nothing. He's always alert and tend to be at the right time and place to put the ball into the net. That's what I love about him. His celebrations of his thumb in his mouth is unforgettable.

Unfortunately, maybe due to his age, we had no choice but to let him go. He wants to go back to where he started to be and it's right for us to let him go. I'm sure that Rafa was reluctant to sell him. His contract is going to be expired and there's no more options for us as well.

Luis Garcia has been great for us. His goals were memorable and without doubt, he will be remembered by us. One of the key members in our Champions League triumph in 2005 and the FA Cup win in a year later.

Torres? Confirmed?

It seems to me that the captain's band on Spanish striker Fernado Torres is going turning out to be true. Torres seems to be on his way to Anfield although there's no confirmation in the transfer.

Reports has shown that Torres is even willing to cut short his holiday to finalise his transfer to Anfield. As a Liverpool fan, I'm definitely excited by the fact of his arrival. Having said that, the delay did frustrate me and Liverpool has been pretty slow these few years in the transfer market. All I hope is a fast transfer and also other signings as fast as possible.

Torres alone won't be sufficient. The board and Rafa may have their own reasons for the slow response, still, I'm afraid that if we are not acting fast, our targets would be gone. I'm looking forward to other signings soon. :)

Other than Torres, Rafa has been busy with the signing of the young kids. All these players are bought mainly for the future and we might see many of them in few years time.

It seems to me that many of you out there feels that our win against Barcelona at the Nou Camp was your Game of the Season. The 2-1 win was a important and memorable game when both Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise scored the 2 goals. Both players were thought to be in a tiff before the game. What a way to silence the media! This game came on top with 41 votes out of 94 with a percentage of 44%.

The second place was the win against with arch rivals Chelsea in the Champions League Semi Final. Daniel Agger scored a beauty while we went on to win the penalty shootout with Pepe Reina being the hero. I voted for this! A match to remember and beating Chelsea is definitely a f**king good feeling. No doubts about that. It came second with 32 votes, 34%.

In 3rd place, the emphatic 4-1 win against Arsenal at home. Peter Crouch's perfect hat-trick with his right, left foot and the header. One of the best home performance by us and I could say that Arsenal didn't know how to handle our tall Peter Crouch. It's definitely a memorable for many especially Peter. 15 votes, 16%.

New Contracts

Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Pepe Reina and Xabi Alonso has all renewed their contracts. It's great to see all these players signing their contracts with us, dismissing any rumors and speculation of them linking or even leaving the club.

The best player in the club, Steven Gerrard will definitely be here for the next few years. We need him around to lift more trophies. Jamie Carragher will still be here commanding the defence, blocking the shots like it's against his life. Both of them are the backbone of the team. We need them to be in team, no doubts about it.



Pepe Reina has also extended his contract. I'm happy to see this news. I like him as our number one goalkeeper. Really hopes he can maintain his good form and keep more clean sheets for us. I'm really looking forward to see him becoming one of our best goalkeepers in Liverpool history.

Xabi Alonso is the fourth player to pen down his signature. There were doubts in his future after Mascherano arrival. However, it's feel great to see the Spanish playmaker pledged his future with us. I love his range of passing and vision. That's an valuable asset for us. Xabi is an unique player who is hard to find. It's important to keep him here and he can provide more which no much players can do. I'm just pleased to see him signed his contract.

With key members of the team assuring their future in the club, what about the new signings? I hope to see some soon.
